A-School is about Teaching "How-To-Teach."

Making Effective Presentations

And Mastering Advanced Aquatics and Lifeguarding Skills

Teaching how to teach: Aquatic School is designed to develop each
Scout's teaching, presentation, and public speaking skills, as well
as their aquatics skills.

Each candidate learns to teach and demonstrate aquatics and lifesaving
skills.
Through constant practice they develop their skills and become not
only teahcers and leaders, but also valuable aquatics resources for
their troops.

Aquatic
School teaches Scouts to teach, to lead, and to be an aquatics program
resource for their Troop. The program is designed to develop each
Scouts leadership, time management, teaching and presentation
skills, as well as aquatics skills. A unique program for Boy Scouts
13-17 years of age, it is intense, demanding, and fun. Scouts come
back changed! Scouts learn to safely organize troop swims and canoe
trips, and improve their skills and certifications in lifeguarding,
aquatics first aid, and emergency procedures.
A tradition in the Longhorn Council since 1954 - outstanding performers
can earn the coveted ANCHOR award. A-School is at Sid Richardson Scout
Ranch July 12-18, 2009. Consider sending several scouts to Aquatic
School each year to assure a safe and enjoyable troop aquatics program.
Register
by December 5 to save $15.
When Scouts arrive they are split into two ships (troops), each with
two watches (patrols) that will compete all week. Each ship will design
its own flag, paddle, and make up ship songs and yells. Throughout
the week Scouts learn to work together as a team to accomplish the
tasks set before them by the staff. Scouts who excel in all areas
of Aquatic School will be awarded the prestigious Anchor Award, given
to only the very best to come through Aquatic School. Each Ships
A-School Paddle will be displayed permanently in the dining hall with
the names of the participants.
Participants return with the ability to teach nonswimmers, handle
aquatic first aid and emergencies, and organize troop swims and floats.
They can also earn BSA Lifeguard, BSA Snorkeling, and Rowing, Canoeing,
Swimming, and Lifesaving Merit Badges.

Special
Note:
Aquatic School is an intense, demanding experience, both mentally
and physically. Although you will be in the water a lot, the days
are long and July sun can be rough. Health and safety are our foremost
concerns, but Aquatic School is not for couch potatoes. Scouts must
bring a good attitude, willingness to work as a team member, and a
desire to accept and meet challenges head-on. This is one of the most
rigorous and challenging activities a Scout will encounter at this
age. And its fun!
