I invite you to take a few moments to check out our camps and programs for 2009. The Camping Committee and the Longhorn Council are working hard to add new programs and improvements to our camps and our Texas High Adventure Base.
A special thanks to all the Scoutmasters who completed our 2008 camp survey! Your valuable input will help us improve our camps and programs and service to Scouts, Venturers, and Scouters. We deeply appreciate your assistance and comments!
New Programs for 2009 are shown below. We hope you like them! Some of the new facilities investments we will make in 2009 include: new Worth Ranch trading post ice machine & ice bag freezers; new WR and SR2 pool filters; new boat engines for WR Motorboating class; new WR rifles; new heated serving lines and warming cabinets for SR2 and Tahuaya; and new water system filters for Tahuaya. More facilities investments will be planned as we continue to study your survey responses and comments.

New Programs and Discounts for 2009
Register by October 15th for 2008 Prices
Troops registering for summer camp by October 15th will get 2008 prices for their 2009 summer camp. Venturing Crews registering for the Venturing Road to Ranger Camp by October 15th will get 2008 prices. New Viking Ship
The Longhorn Council has commissioned a Viking Longship from a nationally known craftsman specializing in ship reproductions from the Viking era. The ship will anchor a Viking Living History program at Chisholm Trail that includes Viking weapons and combat, medieval food, and a Viking village.
The new longship will be a Class B Tall Ship.
F-16 Flight Simulator Cockpits
SR2 Aviation Program opened in 2008 with 16 flight simulator systems to teach Aviation Merit Badge. All simulators are networked to allow Scouts to fly missions together or as opposing teams. In 2009 each simulator will be housed in an F-16 cockpit. Simulators use large screens and the same stick and throttle equipment used in many military simulators.
Fast Draw Competition: Cowboy Action Shooting
Experience the lore of the Old West at Chisholm Trail or at the Brazos River Canoe Trip at Worth Ranch. Stand on the shooting line, next to your opponent, ready to draw... Shooters will fire Colt Peacemakers, lever action 1892 rifles, and double-barrel coach shotguns to compete in a fast draw competition. Official Fast Draw competition targets will show the fastest draw down to one thousandth of a second - and show who really is the fastest gun in the west.
Area 51 Program
Join the earth defense force when you arrive at Chisholm Trail's new Area 51 Outpost. Your mission: repel an alien invasion. Your mission team will receive training and weapons: M-16 paintball rifles with laser sights. Then move out on a night mission to find and destroy the aliens.
In the morning your crew must work to locate the alien spacecraft and destroy it with 81mm mortars powered by compressed air.
New SR2 Multimedia Program
8 Dell workstations at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch, along with video cameras, serve the SR2 MultiMedia Program that includes Cinematography, Photography, Graphic Design, Computers and other Merit Badges. MultiMedia was designed by graphic artist Damian Harrelson. Videos made by the Scouts will be shown at campfire.
Wakeboard Instruction
Wakeboarding instruction is offered at our Advanced Wakeboard School and in the Steele Island Wakeboarding Program at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch summer camp. Join our expert wakeboard staff for a week of instruction and fun. Steele Island is offered every week at summer camp. Advanced Wakeboard School is offered through Lakeview Lodge on July 5- 11, 2009.
New Lakeview Lodge Option
Troops attending SR2 in 2009 have the option of staying in our air- conditioned Lakeview Lodge, 1 mile from the main camp.
Lakeview has 8 cabins, 8 dorms and is right on Lake Bridgeport. Cabins are reserved for Adult leaders, dorms are reserved for Scouts. Troops choosing this option will eat their meals in the Lakeview dining hall.
New Covert Ops Mission and Headquarters
Scouts and Venturers attending Chisholm Trail will see the new Covert Ops mission headquarters and a new mission for 2009. Covert Ops is Cold War living history, where participants use night vision gear, GPS units, radios, headsets, computers, satellite uplinks, and other equipment to accomplish a classified mission.

For Troops attending Chisholm Trail and one of our Boy Scout summer camps, and for Venturing Crews attending Chisholm Trail and Road to Ranger, Reserve by November 15th to get 1 Summer Camp or Road to Ranger leader FREE for each Chisholm Trail Boat reserved.
High Adventure Scout Program
Scouts 14 and older from Troops camping at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch and Worth Ranch can sign up for the High Adventure Scout Program. Older boys can spend a week doing living history and fighting battle reenactments as a Viking warrior at the new Viking Ship outpost, as a frontier soldier at the US Cavalry Outpost, or as a Texas Ranger at our Cowboy Camp. This option is limited to a maximum of 6 Scouts per week.
Camp Tahuaya G-Scale Trains for Railroading Merit Badge
New G-Scale outdoor model train facility to bring more fun to Camp Tahuaya's Railroading Merit Badge. Participants will work with the camp’s experienced instructor to operate and build track, bridges, and model railroad facilities for a large Garden Scale outdoor model railroad near the camp dining hall. Each Scout will build one G-Scale rail car or engine to keep and take home.
Road to Ranger
A week-long advancement and high adventure camp for Venturing Crews. At Road to Ranger Venturers can earn the Outdoor Bronze Award and many of the Elective & Core requirements for the Ranger Award. Held at SR2 on July 5-11.
Register by Dec. 5 for $15 Off Specialty Camps
Scouts and Venturers registering for the Tahuaya Fly Fishing Week, Shooting Sports School, Aquatics School, F-16 Flight School, and Advanced Wakeboard School December 5th will get $15 off the fee.
F-16 Flight Simulator Week
Earn Aviation MB in our 16 new F-16 flight simulator cockpits and fly team-based simulated air combat missions at our new flight center. F-16 Flight Simulator School has two Sessions: July 5-11 and July 12-18.
Shooting Sports Camp Week
Join 6 experienced volunteer NRA and NAA instructors at Shooting Sports School for an intensive week-long course in shooting skills for Rifle, Shotgun, and Archery Merit Badges, plus NRA competitions and the NRA Light Rifle Qualification course.
Aquatic School
A-School teaches Scouts to teach, to lead, and to be an aquatics program resource for their Troop. The program is designed to develop each Scout’s leadership, time management, teaching and presentation skills, as well as aquatics skills. A unique program for Boy Scouts 13-17 years of age, A-School is intense, demanding, and fun. Boys come back changed! Scouts learn to safely organize troop swims and canoe trips, and improve their skills and certifications in lifeguarding, aquatics first aid, and emergency procedures.
Tahuaya Fly Fishing Week
Spend a week at Camp Tahuaya's Fly Fishing Camp - catch bass and trout and learn about fly fishing & fly tying. Camp Tahuaya’s lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout, as well as Smallmouth Bass and Bluegill. June 7-13.
Tahuaya Advanced Crafts Program
We have addes a new electric kiln, 200 molds, and other tools to the Craft Building for Handicraft Merit Badges, Sculpture, Pottery, Art, and more...
SR2 Maverick Troop
Sid Richardson Scout Ranch will offer a Maverick Troop for individual Scouts who can’t make their Troop’s camp trip or who need an extra week of camp. Experienced volunteer Scouters will staff the Maverick Troop. For more information contact Camping Chairman Scott Lindgren at lindgrens@sbcglobal.net.
Additional Investments for 2009
The following are some of the additional investments planned for 2009 for Worth Ranch, Sid Richardson Scout Ranch, and Camp Tahuaya.
Worth Ranch and SR2: New Pool Technology - New pool filters and chlorinators for treating the water in the camp pools.
Worth Ranch: New Boat Engines -
Worth Ranch will add new outboard engines for boats used for Motorboating MB class.
Worth Ranch: New Ice Machines -
We are replacing the trading post ice machine & adding 3 more new ice freezers for storing ice bags at Worth Ranch.
Worth Ranch: New Rifles - New rifles to enhance the summer camp Rifle Shooting Program.
SR2 and Tahuaya: New Dining Hall Serving Lines: We have added additonal new heated serving lines and food warming cabinets to speed serving and double our hot food holding capacity at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch and Camp Tahuaya.
We are adding new additonal salad bars to increase variety and speed of serving at Worth Ranch, Camp Tahuaya, and SR2. |
